Announcing Trail Tenders: A Hands-On Guide to Sustainable Trail Stewardship
March 12, 2025
At YJR Outdoors, we believe that trails don’t take care of themselves—trail stewards do. That’s why we’re thrilled to launch the Trail Tenders Guide, a hands-on resource designed to empower riders, coaches, and volunteers with the skills to maintain, restore, and advocate for sustainable trails.
🚵 First Stop: PICL’s TTC Immersion Weekend! 🚵
Our guide is making its official debut at the 2025 PICL TTC Immersion Weekend on April 12-13 at Raystown Lake. This immersive weekend is all about equipping cycling leaders with the knowledge and tools to preserve and enhance the trails we love.
"I feel incredibly fortunate to have such an amazing network of friends, colleagues, and collaborators who have contributed to making this guide a reality. Trail work is never a solo effort—it’s a community-driven passion, and I couldn’t be more excited to see this program come to life." – John Raisch, Founder of YJR Outdoors
This isn’t just another handbook—it’s a field-ready tool that includes trail journaling prompts, project planning templates, a full directory of trail tools, and best practices for restoration work. Whether you’re new to trail stewardship or a seasoned trail boss, this guide will help you build, repair, and protect trails for future generations.
The guide kicks off with trail journaling tools, including:
✔ Personal reflections: Why do trails matter to you?
✔ Trail Usage Log & Work Log: Track how trails evolve over time.
✔ Sketch Pages: Capture trail layouts, features, or problem areas visually.
Designed to turn ideas into action, this section walks you through planning and executing common trail projects, such as:
✔ Clearing debris and trimming overgrowth
✔ Erosion control and drainage fixes
✔ Building sustainable trail reroutes
✔ Restoring damaged sections
Ever wondered what tools are best for shaping trails? The guide includes a comprehensive field guide covering both common and advanced tools for:
✔ Surface work (shovels, rakes, rock bars)
✔ Vegetation management (pruners, saws, machetes)
✔ Trail reinforcement (tamper, pickaxe, Pulaski axe)
True trail stewardship is about more than just maintenance—it’s about healing the land. The guide dives into:
✔ Identifying and removing invasive species
✔ Replanting native vegetation
✔ Protecting wildlife habitats
✔ Managing erosion and stabilizing soil
🔥 A few spots remain, but they’re filling up fast! If you want hands-on experience with the Trail Tenders Guide, join us at Raystown Lake on April 12-13 for an unforgettable weekend of learning and action.
